Command Center – Free Online Army list builder

command center free online 40k army list builder

I stumbled across Command Center by accident and haven’t regretted it a bit.

The premise behind it is an online tool to submit your army list for review by your peers. It also allows you to save and access your army list AND download them in mega-convenient PDF format or print the list out.

Command Center assumes that you have the Codex for your army next to you as you build a list, so it requires a bit of thought and knowledge about the army that you’re building. The great thing about that is that it’s forcing you to know the army you’re building rather than selecting units automatically and without consideration.

You manually enter in the units, wargear, stat lines and costs; the site keeps a running total of the overall points being used.

Think of it like a glorified spreadsheet with features aimed at roster building. There are time saving auto-complete features to quickly enter in units, weapons and wargear but they require you to have entered them previously and saved it in order to be accessible. Auto-complete will only ever use items you’ve saved on your rosters; there is no global library to choose from. Command Center will not save costs either and this is by design for two reasons. The first, again to get you to better learn your army. The second is to abide by Games Workshop’s laws regarding their intellectual property.

Overall, Command Center is pretty intuitive as far as usage is concerned. There is a small learning curve to get used to the interface, but it’s not so hard as to be a barrier.

I’ve used it for a couple of lists (http://cmdctr.net/lists/774 and http://cmdctr.net/lists/785). Community support is great and Thor (the author) is actively commenting on the site as well. From previous forum experience, responses from readers can be “unhelpful”, so a site like Command Center is a welcome change.

You should definitely check it out!

Warhammer 40000 – The coming storm

khorne dreadnaught

Warhammer 40000 sixth edition is well on it’s way according to rumour and speculation around the internet. The new edition should make some pretty big changes to the game meta, particularly in the Melbourne tourney scene, with a focus back on the assault phase.

At the moment, I am really enjoying my hobby, focussing on a Chaos Plague Marine army for the current tournament season. The build is as optimal as I can make it and still be able to sleep at night! My list for the coming VICC tournament where I will be representing the Hampton Games Club is competitive without being the dual-Lash-Prince build that seems to be the norm. If you’re interested, it’s here.

The good news, again, according to internet rumour is that a new Codex is due for the ailing Chaos Space Marines in the near future. How close this comes to the sixth edition release will impact on the contents of the Codex.

I’m hoping that they bring back some of the missing flavour to the Chaos Space Marines. There is a heap of supporting background for the original Traitor Legions. If you don’t believe me, have a look at the Horus Heresy books!

On top of all the other stuff I have going on hobbywise, I am considering a Khorne army. The Berserker army is a one trick pony that is easy to counter, but a more balanced Khorne list should offer a bit more of a challenge as a player and an opponent. The one thing that’s stopping me is the release of the new Chaos Codex and the impending sixth edition. At the glacially slow process that I build armies, I’d hate to get the Khorne army built only to find it’s all rendered either useless or invalid.

However, that doesn’t stop me from sourcing reference material like the below that I found while trawling the dakkadakka forums.

Has the impending release of a new version affect your hobby?

VICC tournament list

The VICC (Victorian Inter-Club Challenge) was first run in 2010 and the premise behind it is to give the Clubs that support the community and opportunity to put together teams to proudly represent their Club. VICC is one of the few tournaments in Melbourne that run multi-system; Warhammer 40000, Warhammer and WarmaHordes.

In the last few months I have been doing time at the Hampton Games Club and was drafted into playing for them in the Warhammer 40,000 event. Historically, Hampton has always had a really strong presence in the Warhammer Fantasy tournament scene, however, they also play Warhammer 40,000.

VICC Warhammer 40000 follows an interesting format whereby teams of four, with an optional fifth player who can be subbed in, fight it out against another Club. The two day event sees one vs. one matches and the second day is two vs. two.

VICC will be held in the Glenn College, La Trobe University, Bundoora campus (Melways Map X873 G7). VICC 40k will be held in the Airport Lounge, upstairs from the dining hall in the main building of Glenn College. Catch Tram Route 86 (Burke Street) to stop 60 with a 15 minute walk to the Room.
Take Bus Route 250 (from Flinders Street) to La Trobe University and stop at the David Myers Building (the first stop past the boom gates). Parking in Carpark 6 for those that drive, which is free on the weekends.

After my awesome showing at Arcanacon, I have decided that mech rules and retooled my Arc list significantly by adding in Rhino and experimenting with Meltagun armed Chosen who will hopefully outflank the snot out of my opponents and deliver some tank-meltration deep in their end zone. Whurd. Five guys with Meltaguns is hard for anyone to ignore.

The rest of the list is here: http://cmdctr.net/lists/774
As you can see, I’ve decided that Typhus deserves a second chance and added a Daemon Prince with Wings and Mark of Nurgle.
Since Games Workshop FAQ’d Warptime, I’m not conviced it’s worthwhile now.
Deepstrike Typhus and two Obliterators and run the Daemon Prince behind the cover of a Rhino or two, hopefully giving him cover enough to get close enough for combat with something squishy.

VICC is on the 24th and 25th March, so there’s a bit of time to do some playtesting. Unfortunatley, the list is already submitted, so if this turns out to be a loser I’ll just have to live with it!

The Golden D6 BlogExchange

In the past couple of years, I have really begun to marvel at the amazing ideas that people out there have. I’ve lost count of the number of times that I have been stumped for inspiration or stuck on a painting/modelling/list building problem only to have it solved by a well thought out and executed blog post somewhere.

The Golden D6 BlogExchange is our chance to share information about our wonderful hobby. It’s also about getting your stuff seen by more people. The more good posts you write, the more people will read it.

So, if you’ve got a blog that is related to toy soldiers and posts interesing stuff, let me know at the above address.

Today I Painted – Master Ekusa

I am embracing my destiny, finally admitting that it’s going to take me forever to finish a Warhammer or Warhammer 40000 army. Part of the reason is the ever present lack of time. Family, particularly, seem to chew up most of my non-work hours and I wouldn’t have it anyother way. Continue reading »

Late last year, I was all inspired to start working with my Warhammer Wood Elf army, rather than sell it.

After mucking around with a test paint scheme, the autumnal colours really jumped out at me. Continue reading »

I still think that terrain is almost as important as painting your army. After fighting it out all weekend at Arcanacon on tables well populated by cover, it was time to “put up or shut up”. So here goes. Continue reading »
